Keynote Presenter
William Murphy
Founder and senior partner of Murphy, Falcon & Murphy, former judge William H. “Billy” Murphy, Jr. has been a Baltimore trial attorney for decades, aggressively and effectively handling a broad range of ongoing cases. With a 90% success rate in state court cases, Billy Murphy knows how to navigate complex legal matters. He also holds a 40% success rate in federal cases, which is four times higher than the national average (9%). His 40+ years of practice in and out of the courtroom have equipped him to advocate for clients from all backgrounds and walks of life.
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS
Murphy was representing boxing promoter Don King, who faced wire fraud charges brought on by a UK-based bank for allegedly fraudulently claiming $350,000 of refunds from a canceled boxing match. Billy Murphy aggressively defended his client, to get all nine counts dismissed.
Another notable victory involved Murphy, Falcon & Murphy’s representation of numerous homeowners in a case against Constellation Energy. The firm secured a $54 million settlement in 2008 for homeowners whose drinking wells were contaminated by coal ash.

About This Video Replay "I will be encouraging criminal defense attorneys to take a different approach to jury trials. Instead of trying to prove to the jurors that our clients are innocent, we should be emphasizing the legal principle that the presumption of innocence has already given our clients that protection. And since the prosecutor has the sole burden of proof, our role as defense counsel should be to help the jurors discover reasons to doubt, not to try to prove another version of the facts. I will be using the Chinese concept of “Wu Wei” to suggest the less we try to prove the better our results at trial. In my own practice, when I adopted this approach and “stopped trying,” I started winning, hence the title of the webinar. I hope you will join us." Karl P. Video Replay (1 CLE credit hour) Presented By Attorney Timothy A. Doman $50.00 /1 CLE Hour Non-Members $40.00 /1 CLE Hour CDAM MembersAbout This Video Replay: This session is designed to give attendees an overview of Michigan entrapment doctrine with a particular focus on entrapment arguments in the “Skip the Games” sting cases that have proliferated under the aegis of the Genesee County Sheriff’s Department. Session Take-Aways At present, Michigan entrapment doctrine is muddled. Current doctrine comprises two theories: impermissible inducement and reprehensible police conduct. “Reprehensible” in this context is a term of art that asks whether police tactics were a proper use of governmental power. There are viable entrapment arguments in Skip the Games sting cases. Under Michigan law, entrapment issues are decided by the trial court, not the jury. The following court funding units have direct billing agreements with CDAM and their attorneys can register free of charge (they will provide you with the free registration code, if applicable): Barry, Berrien, Branch, Calhoun, Cass, Eaton, Emmet, Genesee, Grand Rapids, Hillsdale, Huron, Ingham, Ionia, Iosco, Isabella, Jackson, Kalamazoo, KCOD, Lapeer, Lenawee, Livingston, Macomb, Marquette, MIDC, Monroe, Muskegon, NDS, Otsego, Ottawa, SADO, Saginaw, St. Clair, Sanilac, Tuscola, Wayne, and Wexford-Missaukee. What does it actually mean to “make an appearance in court”?
It once meant people gathered in person, face-to-face, oaths taken to tell the truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth. It now can also mean pixels, faces and voices on computer screens, as well as too often the assumption that Justice is not merely blind, but bought and rigged. That to serve on a jury is not one of the great, sacred American institutions, but something one couldn’t get out of.
For our clients, and for our country, what do we do?
CDAM’s Trial College is an intensive, five day deep-dive into the mechanics of persuasion and credibility. “Courtroom Communication” must move people to take action on behalf of your client, whether live or remote; so, it is interactive, not achieved through sitting, taking notes on lectures or Power Point presentations. In-session participation will run from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM to provide attendees the full benefit of on-your-feet training with a faculty including Michigan’s best and most experienced criminal defense attorneys, and internationally recognized trial consultant and CLE trainer, Joshua Karton.
